Wedding Planning has always been a highly desirable career choice, largely because of its glamorous appeal and dynamic work culture. Let’s face it, who doesn’t love going to a wedding?

So- the question is- how do you get the job of your dreams? Is it competitive? What skills and experience do you need?

As a training college, we have successfully placed many students in wedding coordinator jobs, as well as wedding decorator and stylist jobs as well.

Our Professional Wedding Planning Fast Track Course teaches you all the required skills to land the job of your dreams, or be self-employed.

We thought that we would share just a few of those skills below…

4 Great Tips For Becoming A Wedding Planner, To Standing Out From The Rest!

1. Sharpen Your Time Management And Organisation Skills

When working at weddings you’re often managing many jobs and people at the one time. So it’s very important that you know how to:

Juggle

Time management is essential for wedding planners who look after multiple weddings and even more demands at once. Being able to prioritize is crucial, particularly when you’re overloaded with requests and need to deal with them in an efficient, orderly manner.

Often, you’ll also act as a middleman between client and event staff. This calls for careful scheduling as you make time for everyone.

Multitask

Dealing with budgets, lists, negotiating with suppliers, and working to tight deadlines, can all become hectic if things aren’t well organized.
Putting together a wedding calls for excellent attention to detail, as one small error can have catastrophic outcomes. Project management calls for multi-tasking, as often you are the contact for everyone – clients, suppliers, etc.

2. Have Pride In Your Job

It’s really important to take pride in what you do.

Having pride in your work as a wedding planner is crucial because if you don’t care, it will become obvious to everyone.

It’s not all glamour

People wanting to work in the wedding industry who think the job is a ‘glorified party planner’ will be sorely mistaken. So much of the work is about the lead-up to an event, and it’s almost administrative by nature. There are also the long hours to consider.

3. Display Professionalism

Remembering that you will be liaising with clients as well as with external suppliers, it’s important to always act in a professional manner. In times of crisis management, it’s important to stay cool and calm – nobody likes a hot-headed wedding planner!

Be A Team Player

Being a professional wedding planner means you are across all components of a wedding, and you need to positively influence those around you.

Whether it’s chefs in catering, florists, wait staff, security, or cleaners, you have to build relationships with each department. It’s important that a Professional Wedding Planner has the ability to motivate and drive people, when necessary.

Getting everyone working for that one goal and common objective is in the best interests of the event.

4. Be Realistic About Entry Level

You may have to start at the bottom. It’s really important to take any opportunities that present themselves.

Work Experience

If you are still studying and work experience opportunities come up, whether they are paid or not, I would definitely advise people to take them.
Indeed, grab any work experience opportunity that comes your way, because this won’t just help you get invaluable experience, it will also help build up contacts.

By building your list of contacts and a profile within the industry, the more likely you are to hear about opportunities when they arrive. Often, jobs aren’t advertised in the events industry, it’s more word of mouth.
