What was your previous line of work and why did you decide to pursue a career in the Wedding Industry?

I worked in the medical field for over 12 years. During this time part of my work was to organise conferences – social events – lectures for our Specialists and Doctors. Doing this was so much fun, from making the invitations digitally, to styling the event or running around hand-delivering the invites. My life has always revolved around organisation and planning to a T.
From then, I chose to begin my career in Events & Weddings as I love styling and planning.

What is your typical day like?

My days vary as I also work two Casual jobs whilst running my Business. However, on all days our morning begins with checking our work emails and responding to urgent inquiries for any of our clients or brides. On days where I work at my other jobs, I usually check emails all throughout the day and our social media accounts as social media presence is so important in our line of work.
On days where I only work on the Business, I start with emails, then selecting from our clients and prioritizing tasks.
Invoices/ Receipting is also on daily tasks. On slow days, I spend my time researching new Venues/ Vendors in our area and scouting those locations. Organizing meetings to chat with the owners and offering our services. Constantly focusing on creating new content, so organising styled shoots if our month is slow on bookings. Updating our website and constantly rearranging our Hire collection.

You may be sitting here going “no way” but the truth is, when you own your business, you will work harder than you ever have in your life. However, if it is something you truly enjoy doing, it won’t feel like work.

What inspires you?

This is such a broad question with so many answers.

Our clients inspire us, their stories and their ideas/ dreams truly inspire us to create beautiful Weddings and also keep doing what we do.
For new inspiration magazines such as Ideal Bride, Brisbane Wedding Magazine ect.. help us find new trends, new themes and I find it helps keep me on my toes on what is “in” at the moment.

Lastly, our Vendors and Business Colleagues. I find it so important to have a good relationship with the Vendors you work with. Time will often be tough, and you may feel like giving up, but having a good support network around you from like-minded business owners/vendors helps keep things in perspective. Last year was hard with Covid, and many of our Vendors almost closed doors, but through our constant conversations and content creation, we helped inspire each other and pushed through. Lucky for myself and all the Vendors I work with regularly, none of us have had to close our doors!

What are your favorite resources for your business?

Oh my goodness, just so many!! Canva, Creator Studios and Story Star.

Canva is just amazing for creating all your branding, from logo to Facebook and social media content you will use this more than ever so learn it and utilize it.
Creator Studio I use for all my social media planning, I know a lot of people swear by Planoly but I found that to gain the full benefits of Planoly you had to pay and even then it never posted content correctly with the tags necessary. Creator Studios allows you to plan and schedule your posts for both Facebook and Instagram!
Story Star, well the name says it all, helps you create quick and easy stories for your social media accounts.

What advise would you give our recently graduated students just starting out in the industry?

The best advice I can give you is be unique, be different. Focus on building your own content on social media and showcase your own work. There are a lot of Wedding Planners out there who all do the same, and in such a competitive industry to begin with you need to find something that is unique to you and makes you stand out from the crowd!

The second best advice I can give you is don’t give up. You will have days, weeks, and even months with no clients, no social media growth and you will feel like giving up but don’t. Keep pushing through, every time you have a happy client their smile will remind you of why you do what you do and all the bad/slow times won’t matter anymore. No business is successful from day 1, it takes years to grow and build an audience and presence that clients love and trust so allow yourself 2-3 years before giving up.
